Ethnographic Project (100% POP-UP)
Tourism as an industry is central to Luang Prabang, the most telling manifestion of this are the night markets. Run every day from 6-10pm these markets fill the main street with vendors, selling locally made textiles, silver-ware and wooden artifacts. We visited Luang Prabang during the rainy season, a constant in the year which makes set up of the stalls extremely difficult. I observed the nightly setup of the night markets a number of times and noted that it takws around 30 minutes to create a structure that is rain resistant booth. The majority of the stall holders are female and will spend the night sitting or kneeling on the concrete ground, protected only by a thin sheet of plastic/tarpaulin.
In response to these observations I have designed a popup store solution that is made from 100% locally found materials that are recycled and utilise local craft/construction methods.
Branded 100% pop-up store, this design solution is an open source, template for use in Luang Prabang. It is an environmentally friendly, locally affordable and easily constructed. Designed to provide a comfortable, time saving and dry alternative to the existing night market stands.
